Around 8 years ago I went to an English center in district 10 of HCMC to ask for an English communication course which focused on speaking and listening. The staff offered me a $75 package for 3 month course. But at that time this more than what I had in pocket as I was a student and really need that to spend for a month. I thanked the staff, took the ad and went home with regret.
But I still kept learning English by myself since 2003, after finished high school where we didn't have an English subject at that time in my class.
Curious about the world and wanting to understand what people over the world talk or say about Vietnam and how they say "hello, thanks, yes.." when I saw some tourists talking together in my local area. We all stared at them like seeing aliens on TV. I bought second hand books to learn from and I wrote down some words each day while serving in the army from 2004 to 2006 and when I finished military service I tried to learn from TV and radio's simple channels at home in my spare time until I moved to HCMC and stayed in a guest house to do grammar review, vocabulary, writing, reading and went to the parks and English speaking club in the center of HCMC to practice my English after school time.
During this time I found that to speak English, talk with foreigners are not too difficult like what people and I thought. At first, I could speak what I could but it felt very difficult to understand what expats asked me back :). Maybe it was just easy for me with simple communication topics, but as it challenged me, I fell in loving speaking to any foreign tourists that my friends and I met in the street.
It is true that practice makes perfect. After one or two years of practicing continuously I am able to understand and recognize accents of people from many countries. When confident with my English ability I went to tutor one student in grade 8 in 2008 with methods of drilling him in speaking and listening. In 2010 I went to interview for work as a translator / interpreter for a small company then keep this career till now and I really love and respect it.
Through my story and the problems of teaching and learning English in Vietnam I founded this English teaching charity to help students in under-developed areas and orphans in SOS villages to learn English for free as it will assist them so much in their future in their thirst for human knowledge.
